Nothing evokes the spirit of the holiday season quite like the smells of the holiday season. Get in a festive mood with these easy, DIY, air fresheners — no weird candles or baking required!
Method 1: Simmer Spices on the Stove.
One of the easiest ways to get your home smelling like the holidays is to place a bunch of Christmas-friendly spices in a saucepan, cover about halfway with water and simmer over low heat for about 30 minutes. Whole spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice and cloves, along with lemon and orange peels and vanilla beans, work really well here. You can also try fresh cranberries and fresh rosemary.
Money-Saving Tip: You’ll find whole and ground spices in the Hispanic foods section of your grocery store or a ethnic grocery store for a fraction of the price. I’ve found that they tend to be fresher and of better quality, too.
Method 2: Spray the room.
Make your very own peppermint room spray! Fill a bowl with 1 cup water and 1/4 cup white vinegar; stir to combine. Add 10 drops peppermint oil, and pour into a spray bottle. Shake before each use.
Method 3: Make a Pomander.
Pierce an orange with a nail or some other sharp object and fill the holes with cloves. If you’d like an even line of cloves, use tape or a rubber band to guide you. Remove the tape/rubber band and store in a cool, dry and dark place for 3-4 days. Check periodically for any signs of mold.
